Kuopio creates pathways into working life for young people and encourages employers to recruit
Kuopio is committed to ensuring that young people have opportunities to take their first steps into working life. At the same time, the city is strengthening the region’s talent base and supporting employers in finding the professionals of the future.
In autumn 2026, the City of Kuopio will employ five unemployed young people from Kuopio within its own services. In 2027, the goal is to provide employment opportunities for approximately 20 young people. By taking action itself, the city aims to lead by example as an employer and encourage local businesses and other organizations to offer young people opportunities to gain valuable work experience and develop their skills.
For many young people, work experience is a crucial step toward a long-term career. Employers, in turn, gain fresh perspectives, new expertise, and the opportunity to get to know future talent at an early stage of their careers.
“The employment of young people is important not only for individuals but also for the vitality of the entire region. When young people gain access to working life, both their future prospects and the region’s talent resources are strengthened,” says Jukka Pitkänen, Business Development Director at the City of Kuopio.
Financial Support Available for Hiring Young People
Employers can benefit from a Youth Recruitment Subsidy, which helps reduce the costs associated with hiring a new employee. The subsidy can be granted for up to €1,500 per month for a maximum period of six months.
Funding is still available, and employers are encouraged to explore the opportunities available to them through the scheme.
Kuopio Employment Services supports employers from the very beginning of the recruitment process. The service provides assistance in identifying suitable support schemes, navigating the application process, and, when needed, finding suitable young candidates for open positions.
A single job opportunity can be a life-changing step forward for a young person. At the same time, it is an investment in the region’s future, skills base, and vitality.
