Top smart tech research, teaching and engineering

Kuopio is home to top research and teaching facilities in engineering and automation fields in Finland. Tech transfer and commercialization creates significant opportunities for emerging smart technologies from the local universities, and gets a significant boost from the extensive deep-tech startup ecosystem.

For smart manufacturing and automation, several collaboration projects and smart manufacturing technologies have brought together partners from public research, SMEs, and industry. Companies within the manufacturing and cleantech cluster in Kuopio include Junttan, EID robotics, ServicePoint, Honeywell, Insta, Rocsole, Savroc and Savon Automaatio Oy.

The research and development at Savonia University of Applied Sciences and University of Eastern Finland robotics platforms make Kuopio a prime location for manufacturing, cleantech and technology firms. Examples of development projects include 3D-printing projects, Smart Welding, Digicenter, Industrial internet and IoT projects, TechnoGrowth, and different automation and engineering projects.

The smart tech cluster is divided into three main business and development areas:

Anssi Lehikoinen, Chairman of the Board, Rocsole

”Kuopio's business environment is excellent for the IT industry. Our business is strongly based on research and expertise at the Department of Applied Physics, University of Kuopio. This connection has enabled long-standing, careful and successful product development in the highly demanding oil and gas industry. It has contributed to our business receiving significant venture capital funding from established companies. With these strengths, we are aiming for robust global growth.”
